Sea freight, also called ocean freight, is the most cost-effective way to move large or heavy shipments out of Nepal. Nepal has no port of its own, so sea cargo from Nepal travels overland to India first, then by ship to its destination. Cargo dispatched from Kathmandu reaches the port in about a week. We route shipments through Kolkata and Haldia in India, mostly Kolkata. Between Kathmandu and the port, cargo moves through the Raxaul-Birgunj corridor, using the Birgunj Inland Container Depot at Sirsiya, Nepal's main rail-linked dry port for containerized cargo.
Sailing time after the cargo leaves port depends on the destination, the shipping line, and customs on both ends. It varies too much to give one number here. Message us on WhatsApp for a real estimate on your specific route.
We ship almost everything by sea freight: chemicals, machinery, textiles, food items, and general commercial cargo. The only things we don't ship are goods that are illegal or goods banned by the destination country's import rules. Not sure if your goods qualify? Ask us before you book. Sea freight costs less for big or heavy shipments, but it's slower. Air freight costs more but gets there fast. If your shipment is time sensitive, choose air. If it's bulky and you can wait, sea freight saves you money. Tell us what you're shipping and by when, and we'll tell you which one fits.
Booking and paperwork. We confirm your shipment and prepare the export documents.
Transport to port. Cargo moves from Kathmandu to Kolkata or Haldia, taking about a week.
Port and loading. Your shipment is loaded as FCL, or combined with other cargo as LCL.
Ocean transit. The ship carries your cargo to its destination port.
Arrival and customs. We work with our contacts on the other end to clear customs and hand off your shipment.
Sea freight from a landlocked country takes more coordination than most people expect: inland transport, port handling in another country, two sets of customs, and a handoff on arrival. Get any one of these wrong and your cargo sits. We handle this ourselves instead of outsourcing it to generalized staff, which is usually where delays start. We work directly with carriers at Kolkata and Haldia, and we know the people and paperwork on the customs side, so problems get caught before your cargo is stuck at a port.
