Three things can stop a student parcel at UK customs: banned food, banned batteries, and a vague customs declaration. Most of them are easy to avoid if you know the rules before you pack.
Namaste Cargo Nepal sends student luggage, books, clothes, gifts, and packaged food from Kathmandu to the UK, door to door. This guide covers what you can send, what the UK bans, how customs treats gifts, and how long delivery takes.
This is where most student parcels go wrong. Nepal is outside the EU, so the strictest UK rules apply. Food sent as a parcel follows the same personal import rules as food carried in luggage, and it must be for personal use, not for resale.
The UK does not allow meat, meat products, or milk-based products from countries outside the EU. The only dairy exceptions are infant milk powder, infant food, and special medical food, which must be branded, unopened, and not need refrigeration.
In practice, this means these Nepali items cannot go:
Sukuti and other dried meat
Meat achar, meat momo fillings and sausages
Ghee and paneer
Eggs, which are not on the UK permitted list for non-EU countries
Honey is allowed up to 2 kg per person. Fish is allowed up to 20 kg per person in total, and processed fish must be dried, cooked, cured or smoked.
Most fruit and vegetables need a plant health (phytosanitary) certificate from the country you send them from. The exemptions include mango, banana, citrus fruit, guava, dates, coconut, curry leaves, packaged and processed plant products, peeled and processed nuts, nut butters and certain grains such as rice.
Packaged black tea, masala tea and herbal tea
Ground spices and masala mixes in sealed packs
Jarred vegetable pickles
Rice and processed, peeled nuts
Packaged sweets and snacks with no meat or milk in the ingredients
Check the label. Products with meat or milk ingredients can fall under the ban. We advise leaving out chicken-flavour noodles and milk-based snacks.
Most students pay nothing on gifts and personal items, but only if the parcel is declared correctly.
A gift must be sent by a private person abroad to a private person in the UK, must not be paid for by anyone in the UK, must be occasional (for example a birthday or festival) and must be declared as a gift on the customs form.
Something bought online for delivery from abroad as a present is not treated as a gift for customs.
Sending gifts to more than one person: Each gift gets its own allowance if the gifts are for different people, wrapped separately, and listed with their own values. Do not pack them as one mixed lot.
Who pays and when: VAT is normally paid to the delivery company before delivery or at collection. Parcels with unpaid charges are usually held for about three weeks and then returned to the sender. Tell the receiver in the UK to expect a payment request so the parcel does not sit in a depot.
A weak declaration is the most common reason for delays. Follow these rules:
List every item. Write the name, quantity and value of each one.
Use plain product names. Write "packaged black tea, 500 g," not "food items."
Declare the real value, including for used clothes. A very low value can trigger extra checks.
Mark gifts as gifts, with the receiver's name and the gift value for each person.
Give the full UK address with the postcode and a working phone number.
Keep a copy of the packing list and a photo of the packed box.
We do. Bring your items to our office and our team packs them for the trip to the UK. You do not need to buy boxes, tape or padding.
Sorting items by type, so heavy things sit at the bottom and soft things on top
Sealing jars and bottles in plastic before they go in the box
Wrapping fragile and sharp items separately
Filling every gap so nothing moves in transit
Sealing and labelling each box with the receiver's name and UK address
Checking every item against the UK rules before it ships
Bring items unpacked, or loosely packed in bags, so we can check them
Keep clothes, chargers, medicine and original documents in your suitcase
Bring a list of items and their approximate value
Keep power banks and batteries at home, because we cannot send them
Send copies by cargo and carry your originals. If you need to send papers urgently, use our international courier service with express delivery.
Message us on WhatsApp with your item list and the receiver's UK address.
Bring your items to our office at Paknajol Marg, Thamel. We collect from Kathmandu addresses as well. We do not collect outside Kathmandu.
We check and pack everything. Our team removes anything the UK does not allow and packs the rest.
We prepare the customs paperwork. You confirm the item list and values.
UK customs clears the parcel. The receiver pays any VAT or duty to the delivery company.
We deliver to the door. You can follow the parcel on our tracking page.
Customs checks and unpaid VAT can add days.
The main UK intakes are September to October and January to February. Book 3 to 4 weeks before you need your items.
Dashain and Tihar are busy gift seasons, so book early.
Check whether your student hall accepts parcels. If not, use a private address where someone can sign.
We do not publish fixed rates, because the price changes with each shipment. These four factors set the cost:
Weight of the parcel
Size of the box
Service type: economy courier or express
Contents of the shipment
There is no weight limit for student shipments. For a quote, use the cost calculator or message us on WhatsApp at +977 9801006432.
